Set in Nevada in the 1860s, Bonanza chronicled the adventures of the Cartwright family who owned a large ranch called The Ponderosa. Ben Cartwright and his three sons, Adam, Hoss, and Joe fought for what was just and decent in a time where lawlessness was common.
The widowed patriarch Ben Cartwright had three sons, each by a different wife: the oldest was the urbane architect Adam Cartwright, who built the ranch house. The second was the warm and lovable giant Eric, better known by his nickname "Hoss." And the youngest was the hotheaded and impetuous Joseph or "Little Joe." They all lived and worked on The Ponderosa. Nearby Virginia City helped populate the episodes with guest starring characters from all over America.
Broadcast between September 1959 and January 1973. Filmed by the National Broadcasting Company at Paramount Studios.

Bonanza, also known as Ponderosa for the 1972 summer reruns, was a one-hour western television show that aired on NBC. This was one of the first shows to be filmed and broadcasted entirely in color for NBC and was neither previously on radio nor a copy of another show. The series ran for fourteen seasons from September 12, 1959 to January 16, 1973 airing 430 episodes and three made-for-television films. It was developed and produced by David Dortort.
The premise of the show is about the Cartwright family on their Ponderosa ranch in Nevada near Lake Tahoe and Virginia City. The clan is led by the father Ben Cartwright, played by Lorne Greene, who has three sons by three different marriages, respectively. All of his wives have died however. His oldest son is Adam, played by Pernell Roberts, who is an architect and has built the ranch house. Eric or “Hoss”, played by Dan Blocker, is in the middle, with regards to age, and is a big and lovable guy. Ben’s youngest son, played by Michael Landon, is called “Little Joe” or Joseph and is an impulsive and rash young man. Their cook is Chinese and his name is Hop Sing, played by Victor Sen Yung. The episodes usually cover about a week in the lives of the family.
“The Spanish Grant” was the 21st episode of the first season and the 21st episode overall in the series. It was originally directed by Christian Nyby and aired on February 6, 1960. As with all of the episodes during this season, “The Spanish Grant” aired from 7:30pm to 8:30pm on Saturday night. The original sponsor for this show was RCA and they were primarily selling new color TV sets. The plot of the episode concerns the acquisition of land by an heiress by the name of Isabella De La Cuesta who is actually just a regular Spanish girl from San Francisco. The Cartwrights, specifically Adam, find out about her and attempt to stop her controllers from killing more people and obtaining more land. (MDF/110)

A beautiful Patricia Medina guest stars in this episode, and several familiar faces are in the supporting cast. Sebastian Cabot of TV's "Checkmate" and "Family Affair" is the notable heavy in more ways than one. Paul Picerni (Lee Hobson from "The Untouchables") also appears. Celia Lovsky (T'Pau from Star Trek's "Amok Time") has a pivotal scene as a Spanish matriarch.
Some good stunt work in a lengthy fight scene in the third act. Familiar theme music replaced by a Duane Eddy tune.
